Getting a crossbow cocked can be a very difficult task if you do not know what you are doing. If you are new to crossbows, there are a few ways that you would be able to get the bow cocked. You could use your hands, which is the way that most people start, but this way tends to be more burdensome for some shooters. The way that I cock my crossbow is by using a rope cocking device. This item can cut your effort to cock your crossbow in half! If your particular model accepts it, you could also use a crank that will make it almost effortless to get your weapon to full draw.
Most crossbows do not have a crank cocking device that they are able to use.
The first way that I recommend you cock your crossbow would be with the use of a rope cocking device. This type of cocking device helps to cut the force that is required to draw the
crossbow back, in half. This would mean that you would only need to pull 75 pounds on a crossbow that has a 150 pound draw weight, if you had a rope cocking device. You place your foot, in the foot stirrup on the piece of equipment and then attach the hooks on the rope cocking device to the string on your crossbow. Once the hooks are secure, you pull on the t-handles to cock the device.
There are also some versions that are on the market that accept the crank cocking aid attachment. If your
crossbow accepts the crank cocking device then all you need to do is attach it to the machine and hook the clips onto the string. You will be cranking the rope back in a fashion similar to that of reeling in a fish on a fishing rod. It's as simple as that! Then you move the cocking device out of the way and you are good to go. Do not use the crank to un-cock the machine. You will damage both the bow and the crank. The only way to safely un-cock it is to fire an arrow into an animal, or into the ground.
