The slingshot has come a long way from its introduction during the early 1800s. What once was a weapon for hunting and killing may now be used as a child’s plaything although several enthusiasts still use this weapon as a sport. Everything about this weapon has changed throughout the course of history.
Several changes have been made on this weapon to increase its killing element, its ease of use, and its durability. This weapon, which was known to fling only small rocks, was once used to propel arrows in great distances. Today, small steel balls were created solely for the purpose of being this weapon’s ammunition.
Also, this weapon is now outfitted with a stronger, more elastic band which would greatly increase its killing element by allowing the use of bigger stones. For its ease of use, the modern designs for this weapon are outfitted with arm braces. This reduces the strain of the weapon on the wrist and forearm while targeting the weapon. This also stabilizes the weapon which makes targeting easier. For its durability, the wooden stock has now been replaced with plastic or metal. The elastic band may be either a tubular or a flat band.
Choosing a slingshot requires an adequate amount of knowledge of the weapon as well as having an actual use of the weapon. Children oftentimes use this weapon to pull pranks on one another and thus need only the most basic form. Oftentimes they use branches and a rubber band to fling folded papers.
On a professional note, comfort is the main factor to consider. Professionals require good form to be able to hit their targets precisely and accurately. They also need to consider the strain they put on their wrists when using this weapon. As such, it is advised that professionals opt to use wrist braces with this weapon.
In terms of comfort, there are three materials that may be used – wood, plastic or metal. Metal is the heaviest of the three and may prove to be a nuisance during aiming. Wood and plastic almost have the same weight but differ in their smoothness. For the elastic band, the flat type is preferred more by athletes because it provides more efficiency and accuracy. On the other hand, the tubular band is preferred more for commercial production because it is much more durable.
