If you are interested in shooting a bow, it is but obvious that you would require a bowstring. If you know the technique, it is fairly simple to make a
bowstring all by yourself. Let us give you some valuable tips you will find useful when you are trying to build a bowstring. To get started let us discuss the fibre that you can use in order to make a bowstring. All modern bow strings use fibers of industrial quality, and it is completely your choice as to which is the fiber you want to use. Polyester is a strong fiber that is about the lowest cost and is popular because of its dual properties of low cost and high durability.
The fibre to be used
A fibre of medium cost is aramid. Aramids are very useful because they do not stretch or fold. However because this is fibre that is known to have some failures that are unexpected at times it is often replaced by another medium cost fibre called liquid crystal polymer. This kind of fibre is much stronger than even steel and does not creep or stretch like others. There are other fibres of medium to high cost such as high performance polyethylene (HPPE). Sometimes in order to ensure 100 per cent success, manufacturers often use composite blends that blend together the best of LCP and HPPE.
The process of making a bowstring
Once you have decided upon the fibre you can go ahead and make your bowstring. Firstly begin by determining the length of the bowstring. If you don’t have an idea about how long the bowstring could refer to the manufacturer manual that comes with your bow, Sometimes the length is also inscribed upon the bow limbs. Next you need to calculate the strands in the string. The number of strands to be used depends upon the weight of the bow and the weight of the string material that has been chosen by you.
Next you set up the winding posts into positions so that they are in a straight line. Next you start tying the ends of the string and wind the string from point A to point B. Keep repeating the steps till you the required amount of strands. Next you untie the string from the first winding post and tie both ends of the string together. In the next step you reset the winding posts into the original serving position. Your string should now look like a rectangle, with each post serving as a corner.
Once your string is ready you have to mount it. To do this mark the nocking point and make the serving point at least two inches below the nocking point you have just marked. Once you are done, make sure you apply wax to your string, and lots of it. An important tip to remember while making a bowstring is that through adding strings makes your bow stronger, it reduces ten flight of your bow quite significantly. Also remember that the knot made in the string should always be at either end of the loop within half inch.
