As a parent, you are the one who knows if your child is ready to learn to use
youth bows. The sport of archery requires one’s discipline and sense of responsibility, so there is no specific age in learning this sport. Some parents enroll their kids on archery clubs at a young age, and this is alright as long as they know how to take care of themselves. Children should know about the safety measures in using bows, though they are well guided by professional instructors. They should be responsible enough not to play with it or point it to other kids.
Your kid is ready to learn archery if he can follow directions from his instructors too. They should be able to concentrate in order to make a successful hit. But most of all, it is important that your child is really interested to learn. Archery is not an easy sport and if there is no interest, it will be very difficult for them. On the other hand, consider enrolling them in summer camps, scouting programs, and archery clubs where they could learn from professional archery trainers. These trainers know about the sport well and they can guide your kids on the do’s and don’ts of the sport. If you wish to train your child by yourself, be sure that you have enough knowledge about archery.
If you see that your child is interested to learn, you have to find the right kind of bow that would suit his age. You need to determine his draw weight and draw length too. If your child is still small and weighs 50 to 70 lbs. a draw weight of 10 to 15 lbs. would be good for them. 70 to 100 lbs. child can handle a draw weight of 15 to 25 lbs. while kids who weigh 100 to 300 lbs. can use bows with 25 to 35 lbs. draw weight. Heavier youths can be comfortable with 35 to 45 lbs. About the draw length, you should use a yard stick to measure it. Place it on the chest bone’s middle part, as your child reaches for it. Check where your child’s fingertips are and get the number of inches. That would be his draw length. You can also ask for help on stores where you will buy archery equipments. Buy extra accessories for archery if your child is really determined to learn the sport. It might be wasted if he soon finds it difficult or uninteresting.
Now that you know about this, ask yourself if your child ready to take archery lessons. And if he is, search for
youth bows now and let him join scout programs. He will surely find this activity enjoyable.
