The deer is only one of the many wildlife animals that can be hunted.
Deer hunting is perhaps the best application of the skill of hunting because, aside from the boar, the deer is hunted by our ancestors as a part of their daily lives. It is considered as one of the safest hunting games since deer do not usually harm the hunter. They are also herbivores meaning that they do not attack humans without provocation. Deer are constantly undergoing a program known as quality deer management which aims to regulate the number of deer per area. Quality deer management also has guidelines which help in either propagating or reducing the number of deer depending on the need.
Propagation
Guidelines for propagation of deer include improving the food quality, habitat improvement, and buck relocation. Food quality is very important in deer propagation because it determines the nutrients that the animals get. Weed is also controlled under food quality improvement. Habitat improvement includes the intervention of man in changing the terrain where the animals thrive. This includes placing the greener leaves near the forest floor thereby allowing the deer to eat it. Buck relocation aims to improve breeding. It also involves locating males which have gotten lost from the pack.
Reduction
A certain area can only support a certain number of animals. Reducing the number of deer aims to maintain the stability of the environment as well as maintaining the natural balance of food sources. Reduction of deer mainly relies on
deer hunting. Associations hold lectures to inform people on how to hunt deer properly. A state may also hold an open season of hunting for deer if the population gets too high. Each state is strict as to how the deer should be hunted but the one shot to kill policy is encouraged by every state.
