Hunting has been done by our ancestors since time immemorial. Our earliest ancestors used crude weapons such as large stones which they threw at animals to kill them. As time went by, our ancestors developed new weapons such as stone knives and spears for better killing capabilities. The only problem with this method is that our ancestors need to be close enough to the target in order to strike the killing blow. This is very hard considering that animals have very acute hearing capabilities. This is why long range hunting was developed.
Long Range Hunting
Long range hunting was developed to hunt animals which prove to be very difficult to hunt using close proximity methods. Such animals are also fast enough to outrun people. This is what led to the development of long range weapons such as throwing spears and bows. Bows are the primary long range weapons because the ammunition is much lighter and reloading is much faster. Throwing spears were only used for a short time because when the spear fails to hit the target, the hunter is now burdened to reclaim the spear before having a chance to take another shot. Using bows is what came to be known as the traditional hunting method.
Traditional Hunting Methods
Today’s traditional hunting methods include not only bows but guns as well. Traditional hunting methods today require the hunter to hunt in an open terrain using only lures or the natural environment to hunt the animals. Melee weapons are not included in traditional hunting methods and as such must not be used. While more people prefer guns, the bow is still considered as the traditional weapon for hunting.
